As an independent, Canadian company, we are taking steps to address our environmental footprint in our own unique ways. We don’t pretend to have all the answers but we acknowledge the need to do what is right and take action now.
In 2022, eLiasz and eLLa Jewelry is officially run-on green electricity that comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from Canadian renewable energy facilities.
We currently displace 1.6 tonnes of CO2e per year by running our office and studio operations here in Edmonton, Alberta on an estimated 850 kWh of clean, renewable energy/month.
This is in addition to our ongoing investment in Canadian certified carbon offset credits to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions footprint from our shipping. We chose Canadian clean energy provider, Spark Power - BullfrogPower and Less Emissions as our clean energy and emissions offset partners.
All of our branded tissue paper is printed with soy-based inks, on FSC-certified paper, and is acid, sulphur, and lignin-free. Our tissue is 100% compostable, recyclable, and made from recycled materials. Our branded tissue producer is also an Eco-Alliance partner, which means that trees are planted in areas in need of reforestation, including projects in British Columbia and Ontario.
In 2022, we introduced our new standard mailer box, which is 25% of the size of our traditional mailer box, more durable, recyclable, and re-usable for easy returns and exchanges. Reducing the volume of packages in delivery vehicles and enabling reuse are simple ways to lower emissions. Did you know our standard envelope mailers are filed with recycled newspaper!
We choose Canada Post as out official shipper, which has the largest fleet of hybrid vehicles in Canada, with a net-zero target. Canada Post continued to introduce electric vehicles into their fleet, as well as vehicles running on low-carbon fuels such as compressed and renewable natural gas.
Single use plastic is our next major area to address as we explore alternatives for our plastic packaging. We have a lot to learn as we explore options to switch from oil-based plastics to plastics made from sustainably produced bio-based raw materials, recycled ocean bound plastic, and certified home and commercial compostability. This will not solve the issue of plastic pollution in its entirety but it will help to reduce our dependence on single-use fossil raw materials as a company.
We continue to invest in reducing our carbon footprint, investing in more sustainable packaging and rethinking the way we operate. These are initial steps to address the footprint and emissions created by transporting eLiasz and eLLa jewelry. Our goal is to achieve carbon neutral shipping.
These are just a few small steps we are taking on our long journey to do better!
